Parenting: Am I doing it Wrong?

A long time ago before I started this blog, like years ago, I followed a blogger named Life with Levi.

I remember one of her post being about being a Crappy Parent. Several of us then wrote our own blog post about being a Crappy Parent and shared them. Here lately, I can’t seem to get those post off my mind.

This world is full of judge mental people. And I am so over it.

I always grew up thinking how when I had kids I want to have a very open relationship with them. I want them to feel like they can come to us as parents and talk to us about anything they need to. I also feel like as a parent it is MY job to determine what I allow my child to do, play, watch and participate in.

For the most part we allow our son to watch things most 9 years olds aren’t allowed to watch.

For example:

  • Glee- He has been watching this with us since it first aired on TV. May 19, 2009. Do you know how old he was? 2 years old! Do you think he knew what the heck was actually going on on that show? No! Did he understand the topics that were being played out in front of him? NO! Did he enjoy the music being played and sung? HECK YES! That was what mattered to him. The music. He enjoyed it. So we let him watch it. As he got older, he became more aware. You know what he did? He asked questions and as his parents WE ANSWERED THEM TRUTHFULLY and DISCUSSED the situations with our child.
  • Rent- Yep, My son has seen Rent the Movie version of the Broadway show. And you know what? HE FREAKING LOVES IT!  Again, the music pulls him in. This movie hasn’t brought up the questions yet that I am waiting for. Since AIDS is a big part of the movie I have expected questions on that topic. But, they haven’t come. Yet. I am sure one day he will ask what it is and how it effects them. But for today, he loves the music.
  • Almost all Super Hero movies. I am not talking cartoons. Although, yeah he will watch those some. I am talking Avengers, All the Thor movies, IronMan movies, SpiderMan, Captain America. I have had people ask me, Why? There is language in those movies. Why let him hear that? You know what? My kid hears bad language more from other adults in food places or the store than he does those movies. Just the other night we were sitting in Canes eating dinner and a group of adult males were sitting behind him. The “F” word was dropped more times than we would of liked. Do you think it is better for your child to hear those words elsewhere and use them? Or to hear them with you, talk about how they are being used, and explain and discuss why we should not use those words. My son knows the words are “bad” and knows as a child he isn’t supposed to use them and that is enough for me.

Y’all this is just an example of the TV/Movies he watches or has watched.

I get questioned anytime someone finds out something he is allowed to watch that their kids are not allowed to watch.

A lot of it goes to “Are you a Christian?”

Yes we are. My son is getting baptized October 29th, 2016. A little over a week away. We are VERY active in our church, and church events. My son goes to church and class every weekend and we take him to Awanas on Sunday evenings. During the Summer he participates in VBS and Church Camp. We pray with every meal at home or in public. We talk to our son about the importance of trusting Jesus as our Lord and Savior.

“How can you allow him to watch such shows?”

Because what else is there to watch? TV is crap these days with a few somewhat decent shows here and there. Big Bang Theory is one of our favorites… say what? YES MY SON KNOWS THE BIG BANG THEORY IS FALSE AND ISN”T OUR BELIEF. Doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy a good laugh on TV.

Percy Jackson. How many know who and what I am talking about? Percy Jackson and The Lightening Thief. Percy Jackson and The Sea of Monsters. Percy Jackson and The Olympians. There are a ton more. I have gotten crap for letting my son watch these movies. Why? Because they have other Gods in them. Yes, some people believe that the Ancient Greek Gods existed. We don’t. So we use this movie to explain to our son that while some people may believe it, it is not our belief and therefor just another made up movie that some big director and actors got a whole lot of money to make!

It is not just those.

  • Harry Potter- all of them.
  • Wicked
  • Twilight-again, all of them
  • Disney Channel-Because yes even it can have issues.

As a Christian, if we took away all the shows that were against what we believe in and threw them out, what would we be left with? Hardly anything.

As a Christian though, I am really sick and tired of OTHER CHRISTIANS being the most judge mental people I have ever met.

I am also the parent who lets her son play video games, computer games and card games. Including:

  • Minecraft- on all devices.
  • Disney Infinity
  • Pokemon

Again, those are just a few.

I was just recently informed that Pokemon was a huge NO for Christians because it is demonic. What? Yes, that is what I was told. Pokemon has been out since I was a kid, if not longer. I remember when kids would bring their cards to school and trade them during recess. I know there is also some kind of actual game involved, but really and truthfully I have no clue and wasn’t even into it until Pokemon Go and I even had to recently delete that app because it kept messing up.

BUT, back to being demonic…

I learned a word today I have never heard: occultic ( What is funny is my auto correction is telling me that is not a word that is spelt correctly… )

So we have this made up word that basically means: Knowledge of the Hidden. Sounds spooky right? ( you have to know I have rolled my eyes several times.)

So according to an article I read online, Pokemon falls under the category of Occultic. Pokemon also teaches Evolution, Spells (Magic! The Horror!), and Pokemon characters are basically monsters…

Minecraft is demonic because you know it has Zombies and time stops and waits for you to return, or some crap like that.

You know what I see when my kid plays either of those games.

  • He is learning skills. In Pokemon it could be a trade. Negotiation skills. Socialization skills. How to handle himself in a situation where if he needs to disagree or agree with someone he will know how to handle himself.
  • In Minecraft he is learning to build things and use his imagination. He is learning to code and work with others.

I am not going to take those things away from my child because someone else does not approve.

What I am going to do, is teach my child culture. What is wrong and right. I am also going to teach him to be kind to others and to treat others the way that he would want to be treated. I am going to teach hm to love everyone and to help out in the world.

Because those are important to me and our family.

edit: I started this two weeks ago. I had to stop because it was upsetting me so much to even write this. Tonight I was able to calmly sit down and finish it.

Life is beginning to be normal again.

I haven’t written in awhile. Life has been crazy hectic.

I feel like Summer flew by and now we are in October? I mean where did August and September go?

We have had family living with us since May and they just recently moved into their new home. We are very happy for them!

For most of September, I had some medical issues and have seen the doctor more than I would of liked to. I have also had too many vials of blood taken. That is sorting itself out, so hopefully not many more trips for blood to be taken! ( I kind of feel like this whole topic should be its on blog post)

We have started homeschooling back up and joined a new co-op this year. It has been going well so far and P is moving along great in all subjects! He is doing History/Geography, Theater and Hands on Science at his co-op once a week. Also, part of P’s homeschooling this year is including Home Ec. He has to put together a dinner once a month. This includes picking out the meal, figuring out what he needs for each meal and then going to the store and buying the items. He is given a set amount of money and can not spend over that amount. So far he has done great! Tomorrow night he is cooking us Rootbeer Barbecue Chicken for dinner!

1

This was one of the first meals he made. Lasagna rollups! He did a fantastic job and even ate this with us! That was one of his rules: He has to eat whatever he makes!

2

Working on Diagramming sentences. This year for Grammar we are using Growing with Grammar. So far he has loved it.

3

The Perot Museum in Dallas did their annual Homeschool Day. We joined in. They give you a little challenge to complete, but he got bored of waiting in line at each station so we ended up just walking around the museum instead of doing the challenge.

Another big change this month is I (along with my husband) started a new side business. It is called StyleDots. It is a jewelry line mostly. There are main pieces that you can purchase and then you can order dots in either 12mm or 30mm to go on each main piece. Best thing is each dot comes off with a little tool and you can change out your dots! I instantly fell in love with this line and decided to start selling it.

While life is finally beginning to feel normal again, the holidays are coming up and things may be changing. We have some home projects that we want to work on and have some family coming into town at the end of the month!

It Is a Competitive World Out There!

And, I am not even talking about the sport side of things.

Have you ever had one of those moments where you just can’t believe you are seriously going through it?

I have. A few times. But, todays hit me hard. As I stood in the aisle of a store, I just could not believe the situation I was in.

I had sent a friend a message asking for advice. Simple. Advice from a friend who was more aware of the products then I was. Instead of what could of been a friend giving a friend advice and help, it was turned around. I was copying her.

Here is the thing. She has a small business. She has been growing her business for a couple of years  now. She started off small and has grown very well for her small business. I have even bought things from her and sent people her way to buy products from.

I don’t have a business. The things that I am making are for my personal use. Do I hope one day to be able to make things and sell them? Maybe. But, right now my plan is to learn and make things for fun.

That is why I asked a friend for advice. When I asked what I was copying because all of my designs so far I had pulled off a site meant for the machine I was using, she said it was the suppliers. Hobby Lobby and Walmart. Really? I just wonder how many crafters who make and sell things buy theirs at Hobby Lobby and Walmart and say that others are copying them when they buy them there.

It got me thinking as I walked around looking at items with my son. How freaking competitive this world really is.

Everywhere, everyone is competing to be the best of the best. It sucks.

Then, I really thought it. How many of the people out there help others and give advice when someone comes to them and trust them?  Would you help someone or shut them down? Would you lift them up and encourage them or push them aside since they are the competition?

Bloggers: How many of you actually started blogging and had no idea what you were doing? I know I did and still feel like this sometimes. I started a blog, had it a few years, deleted it and started a new one. Got bored with that one and deleted it. 3rd times a charm right? What do I and many others do when we need help with blogging? We turn to other bloggers,  who make a living even off blogging to help and give great advice. There are groups you can join that will tell you what blogging platforms to use, how many times a week you should be blogging, topics that are popular and topics to stay away from. There are even conferences you can attend as well. There are even bloggers who get paid sponsored post who will gladly pass them to newer bloggers to help them grow and learn the field! Blogging is such a great community of people.

Photographers: Anyone and Everyone who has wanted to become a photographer has started somewhere. If they really want to make it they even ask photographers in the field longer than them for help and advice.  You might even take a class from another photographer who teaches you how to use your camera and a few skills to use! I love photography. I have joined several groups on Facebook and you know what? Every member on there gives amazing advice on shooting tips, places to buy props, places to buy backdrops, places to buy lens and they even tell you which lens they recommend! Because they are a great community of people who want others to succeed as well.

I recently bought a Cricut Explore. It has been awhile and things have changed since the last time I owned one of these cutting machines. Of course, my natural instinct is to ask someone who is familiar with products to use with this machine. Wether it be vinyl, bags, shirts, glasses, pillow covers, I want someone I know that I can trust and talk with about the products I know will last. I joined two groups on Facebook. Strangers, people I have never met in my life have helped me, given me advice and even shared their designs (free most of the time) and where they get their products with no problem whatsoever. These groups have over 30,000 members each and not a single one of them have said that others are copying them when other members ask for advice on where to get products to use for their projects.

Do we really live in such a place where we have to go to strangers and ask for advice and they are more willing than even our own friends are?

I am competition with no one and if someone needed advice or help from me I would be honored they trusted my opinion and came to me.

How do you feel about this competitive world we are living in and what are you doing to make it better?

I found this quote today and felt like it really went with how I felt after this morning.

July Instagram Wrap Up

While P was away at camp, I was in charge of keeping his lovie (G) and my husbands lovie ( yep, that pooh is his from the day he was born!) entertained! We went on some fun adventures while the boys were at camp! I took pictures to share with P when he got back from camp so that he knew they were ok!

The others are just us having fun this summer! We have kept ourselves very busy this summer! We have family living with us at the moment ( they have been with us since the middle of May!).

I promise ( to my few followers) I will come back to blogging full time very soon! I have tons of post I need to sit down and write out! We also have several home projects we are about to begin work on and I can not wait to share them! Also, I got my very own Cricut Explorer and can’t wait to share the things I have already made and plan on making!

Love from Texas!

Summer Camp

Today, my husband and my son left for camp. For 5 days. This will be the first time that P has gone to camp for 5 days.

1

The past two years he has gone to camp, but it has been a Friday afternoon- Sunday afternoon.

This time is will be a Friday afternoon-Tuesday afternoon.

5 days.

Without my husband or my son.

2

This is also the first year that my son has left his lovie G at home. He has had his lovie since he was born and has only slept without it one night. Tonight will begin 4 nights without his G.

P is very worried about this and to calm him down I am taking G on all kinds of adventures and taking photos to show P that G is missing him, but still having fun!

3

First stop was getting us some cupcakes from Smallcakes. Our favorite cupcake place in town! I got a lemon drop, Pooh got a wedding cake flavor, and G got chocolate with no frosting ( That is P’s favorite kind too!) I will be posting on my Instagram account: (Wood_Home_Adventures) our adventures while the boys are away! Please feel free to follow!

Dallas Strong

blue

Last night around 9pm my social media accounts started blasting about the shooting that occurred in Dallas, Texas.

I did something I try not to do. I turned on the news. We watched live as reporters reported from around Downtown Dallas. Held our breath when police would run toward gun fire. Held our breath as the reporters and street goers ran for cover.

It was heartbreaking to watch. Our city under attack.

Our police force under attack.

And why?

I get it. #blacklivesmatter but you know what, #ALLLIVESMATTER!

The protest was peaceful. They came, they spoke, they were leaving and a few assholes decided to harm our police force. The same police force that was just out there protecting the people in the protest! Because they were mad at white cops.

Now, because these snipers decided to retaliate against our police force for actions of officers in A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT STATE, 5 officers have now lost their life.

When does it stop?

When does all the hate go away?

When will people stop using the race card?

When will we work together instead of against each other?

When will we learn that some people do horrible things, but that does not mean you take it out on others.

Guess what…

YOU get to make your choices daily.

YOU get to decide what your actions are going to be.

YOU get to decide if YOU are going to help make this world a better place!

Tonight we pray for the lives that were lost.

Tonight we pray for their families.

Tonight we pray for this country and for people to stop acting like crazy fools and come together to make this world better for the next generation!
